Wolf Reik is Associate Director of Research Strategy and Head of the Laboratory of Developmental Genetics and Imprinting at the Babraham Institute in Cambridge. After receiving his M.D. from the Universities of Freiburg and Hamburg in Germany, he went on to study for his postgraduate degree with Rudolf Jaenisch before undertaking postdoctoral work with Azim Surani in Cambridge as an EMBO fellow. A Fellow of the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine, Dr. Reik headed the Programme of Developmental Genetics at the Babraham Institute before taking up his current post as Associate Director.
Dr. Reik's main research interest is genomic imprinting - both its mechanisms and functions in development and after birth. His group also studies the epigenetic mechanisms of gene regulation in early embryos, germ cells, and stem cells, and is interested in the role of epigenetic reprogramming in cloning and stem cell plasticity. The numerous awards and recognitions for his work include the Wellcome Prize of Physiology; he also serves as an elected member of EMBO and as a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. He has served on several national and international academic boards including the Cancer Research UK Programmes Committee, the BBSRC Strategy Panel and previously sat on the Medical Research Council Cross Board Group. He also serves on the Executive Board of The Epigenome EU Network of Excellence, the scientific advisory board of Epigenomics AG Berlin and Seattle, and is a consultant to CellCentric Ltd, Cambridge. |
