Ginés Morata

Ginés Morata is presently Research Professor at the Centro de Biología Molecular (CSIC-UAM) in the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain. He earned his Ph.D. in Madrid in 1973 and spent over three years as postdoc at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge (UK) before returning to Spain to lead his own group. Over forty years he has used the fruit fly Drosophila to study some general problems of Developmental Biology. He was involved in several major developments of the field like the discovery of compartments, of cell competition, the deciphering of the genetic structure of the bithorax complex, the discovery of phenotypic suppression, or the genetic basis of appendage development. His more recent work is focused on the phenomenon of apoptosis in Drosophila and its role in tumour formation and regeneration. He has been awarded several national and international prices
