Luis Puelles

Luis Puelles currently serves as Full Professor of Neuroanatomy in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Murcia in Spain. He earned his degree in medicine from the University of Grenada, Spain in 1971, and his doctorate in comparative neuroembryology from the University of Sevilla, Spain in 1973. Puelles held a range of different teaching and research positions in human anatomy and comparative neuroembryology and neuroanatomy at several universities, including Universities of Granada, Sevilla, Badajox, Cadiz, and Murcia. He has also served on the editorial board of many international journals, such as Brain, Behavior and Evolution, Journal of Comparative Neurology, Journal of Neurocytology, and European Journal of Anatomy.

Puelles’ main interest is examining the morphological and developmental Bauplan of the vertebrate brain and the mechanisms involved in the implementation of the developmental program across a wide range of animal species. He has pioneered the topological analytical mapping of gene expression in brains and has applied this to test, corroborate, or amend earlier notions on the morphological structure and subdivisions of the central nervous system in vertebrates. His work has led to the creation of the concept of neural genoarchitecture (or genoarchitectonics). He is the author of over 180 works, including scientific articles, reviews, book chapters and books, which encompass almost all areas of the vertebrate brain.
