Outline

The 21st CDB Meeting is entitled "From Regeneration Biology to Regenerative Medicine (I)".

Why can regeneration-competent animals such as newts restore their missing body parts, but mice and humans cannot? In the past decade, great advances in regeneration studies have revealed many of the molecular mechanisms underlying regeneration. Thus, we now aim to develop strategies to induce regenerative response in humans for replenishing missing tissues and organs by understanding the molecular basis of regeneration from regeneration-competent animals, combined with technical advances to induce cellular reprogramming events.

In this meeting we would like to discuss a common molecular basis for morphological regeneration and to investigate why the regenerative ability varies greatly among animals at the molecular level. Here we invite top scientists studying regeneration biology and also those working in regenerative medicine. Through discussions among biologists and medical researchers, we hope to propose new ideas for inducing a regenerative response in non-regenerative animals, such as mice, using genetic manipulation.

The topics include:
・principles of regeneration
・regeneration of skin, including hair
・regeneration of heart muscles
・regeneration of eyes and the brain
・regeneration of limbs and appendages

On the last day of the meeting we would like to hold a discussion focusing on the differences between regenerative and non-regenerative animals and the future collaborations between regeneration biologists and medical scientists.

Applicants are encouraged to submit poster abstracts with their applications. A limited number of travel fellowships will be available for young scientists from abroad.

We look forward to seeing you in Kobe!

About Kobe
The city of Kobe is located in the Western part of Japan in a unique setting between the Rokko Mountains and the Inland Sea.

The city's port has historically played an important role in opening Japan up to international influence and the city retains a cosmopolitan and sophisticated air to this day. In addition to a bustling Chinatown and the more relaxed historical foreign settlement, there are a number of famous hot springs to the north of the city.

Japan's renowned public transport system also means that Kobe is within easy reach of the ancient capitals of Kyoto and Nara, which contain over 1,000 historical temples and shrines.
