OUTLINE | ||||||||
Date: April 13 (Mon) - 15 (Wed), 2009 Venue: Auditorium, 1F Building C RIKEN Center for Developmental Biology 2-2-3, Minatojima-minamimachi, Chuo-ku, Kobe 650-0047, Japan Organizers: Raj Ladher (RIKEN CDB, Japan) Clare V. H. Baker (University of Cambridge, UK) Shinichi Nakagawa (RIKEN ASI, Japan) Topics: - Mechanisms of Sensory Induction - Sensory Cell Specification - Evolution of Senses - Development of Different Modalities - Development of Sensory Architecture - Models for Development and Sensation Message: This meeting aims to synthesize current data in sensory formation. We hope that by considering the senses, common themes can be established in sensory development, which can be used to take novel approaches in this research. In particular we are interested in the specification of sensory cells, the mechanisms of sensory cell organization and the use of non-model systems to understand the developmental basis of sensory integration and behavior. We will focus on the following three themes. - Do sensory cells arise from a common primordial sense cell? Are considerations of such relationships useful when addressing problems in sensory cell specification and regeneration? How is diversity generated? - Sensory organs of higher animals (arthropods, cephalopods, chordates) are organized into clusters. What are the mechanisms of clustering and are these mechanisms conserved? - Can we find common information processing networks in these organisms? How is the development of sensory integration specified? Do fundamental physical properties (such as oscillatory behavior) hold clues to the basis for such integration? |
