Sex determination and the role of SRY |
| : | In most mammals, sex is genetically determined by the presence or absence of the Y chromosome. Sry was discovered in 1990 as the only gene on the Y chromosome required to initiate male development. SRY is a member of the SOX transcription factor family. However, despite much characterisation of the SRY protein and attempt to find its target genes, little had been known the molecular mechanism how SRY leads to maleness. This long-sought understanding has been now consolidated by the recent demonstration that SRY directly acts, in collaboration with a orphan nuclear receptor SF1/Nr5a1, on a gonad-specific enhancer of Sox9. |
